Brian and his team at Maridale Construction were responsible for the renovation of our 1950’s home. Working with Callidus Architects, specialists in character homes, they created a space that ties in seamlessly with the rest of our house.
There were elements of the renovation that required replicating original features and continuing those in the new space. These have been done impeccably.  There was also panelling and beading work done to suit the era of the house which, again, was beautifully executed. The result is a light, open kitchen and living area that maintains the warmth and character of the original home.
During the renovation we lived in the house, and continued to homeschool our kids here. The renovation, of course, disrupted our daily living but the relationships with the team on site were such that it was not uncomfortable. Everyone was very friendly, great with the kids, and very mindful of the fact that we were around. The subcontractors employed by Maridale Construction were similarly great to deal with, and we appreciated the good working relationships that everyone clearly had with each other.
We are extremely happy with the quality and finish of the work Brian and his team achieved.

It is a pleasure to be able to write this reference on behalf of Brain Mariner and his team at Maridale Construction. I selected four builders from the Master Builders list and invited them to tender for construction of a new two storey dwelling, comprising double garage, lounge, kitchen, bathroom, two bedrooms, laundry and a lift. One of the key features of the build was the amount of excavation that was needed and the construction of a number of structural retaining walls. Maridale Construction was not the lowest tender but I was impressed by Brian’s approach and professionalism and felt he was somebody I could work with. Brian managed the construction from beginning to the end and we found him to be an excellent project manager and communicator. The standard of workmanship throughout the project was very high, work was completed on schedule, the worksite was kept tidy and all staff were a pleasure to deal with. I have no hesitation in recommending them to others and would use them again if the opportunity arose.

Maridale Construction completed two major renovations/extensions for us, both in Lower Hutt. The first was in 2002 and the second was in 2010. The first extension was a Middleton and Novak design with a number of new materials and new construction details which the builders readily adopted. The timing for the construction was important as we were living in the house at the time. Communication was excellent and Brian’s team was very considerate of our needs while they progressed with the construction at speed. We very much enjoyed working with Brian and his team not only for their professionalism, but also their friendly ‘everything is possible’ attitude and their attention to detail. The house received numerous comments from inspectors, other builders and buyers as to the quality of the workmanship, even after a number of years. We so enjoyed working with Brian on the first house that we immediately asked him to help with our next project, a 1906 villa that required an addition with internal access to a double garage. We knew we wanted to work with Brian and his team again and like the first time, building went smoothly as Brian’s team readily embraced changes in the construction details as required to integrate the old with the new. We have recommended Brian to a number of friends and we would not hesitate to work with him again in any job, big or small. As we all know building is a stressful time but working with Maridale Construction has allowed us to do major renovations twice in 10 years with relative ease.

Brian was the project lead and builder for my new home at 36 Sylvan Lane. This home won the Master Builders gold award (in recognition of excellence in workmanship, creativity and innovation) for the Wellington region in 2007 for the price range of $600k to $1m. In addition the home won the Mico Bathroom Excellence award and the Future Proof Building (sustainability) award. The house received the NZIA Resene Local Award for Architecture in the category “Residential – Special Needs” with a supporting description “The thoughtful and considered application of universal principles of accessibility has made for a fully integrated solution to living on wheels on the side of a hill. The design, planning, construction and attention to detail have all been thoroughly explored and executed to form a spacious, supportive and naturally accessible living environment. Brian and the Architect worked as a credible team and a challenging design. Brian was easy to work with, professional in all his dealings and trustworthy. Nothing was ever a problem and any site matters were talked through and agreed in an open and honest manner. Brian and his team were skilled tradesmen who produced high quality work with an eye for detail and a high finish. I was able to come onto the site at any time and Brian ensured that access was made for my wheelchair. I can commend Brian for excellence in what he does and the professionalism in all his dealings.

The house has featured in:

  • The Dominion Post Indulgence feature on Saturday 21 July 2007.
  • The Upper Hutt Leader on 1 August 2007.
  • Homestyle magazine Issue 21
  • Plenty magazine Winter 08.
  • The book New Zealand Architecture 2007.

Maridale Construction were given the contract to complete our house last year. We found Brian Marriner and his team fantastic to work with. They did not give the cheapest quote but when we met Brian and talked about the build process he gave us such confidence that we were going to get what we wanted. Throughout the process Brian always kept us informed and listened to any concerns or questions that we had. The house was not a standard house and had some difficult architectural details which Brian’s team handled with ease. The house has been beautifully finished and we are complimented all the time by visitors on the house construction. We would not hesitate in recommending Brian and Maridale Construction for any building job.

We have worked with Maridale Construction on a number of projects over the years and have always been happy with quality of workmanship and outstanding end-results. We continue to employ Maridale Construction as we see them as reliant straight-up craftsmen and feel confident, when working with them on site, that a high quality finish will be achieved.
